Dragonfly magick.

Over the past six weeks I've been slowly reading and absorbing the lessons of two pretty amazing books: Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, and The Intention Experiment: Using Your Thoughts to Change Your Life and the World by Lynn McTaggart. Taken together, these two books make a very compelling case that our thoughts and and intentions can be used to shape physical reality. Scientific research is now beginning to prove that the thoughts in our head, when coupled with strong desire and persistent effort, become a tangible, measureable force in the world. Having read these books and several others on the "law of attraction," I am now convinced that this notion is true. It just makes sense to me. I've seen it pop up in my own life, little coincidences and synchronicities that would be meaningless to anyone other than me. Here's an example.

As part of my twenty year reunion this past weekend I promoted myself as a writer by placing an ad for Dragonfly Heart in the reunion book. I had several people ask me about the book and my writing. A few people said they would buy the book from Amazon.com. Even though I didn't sell any copies directly, I feel as though I got my money's worth from that ad. It generated a lot of talk, a lot interest in me and what I do. Usually I'm the quiet one watching from the sidelines, but at the reunion Friday night I felt like quite the social butterfly (or dragonfly, if you will).

On Sunday I was cutting the lawn in my backyard when I found something small and black twitching in the grass. Wanna know what it was?

A dragonfly.

It couldn't fly away because its wings were soaked by the light rain that was falling. I almost ran over it with the lawn mower, but swerved away just in time. I picked it up, let it crawl on my finger for a moment, and then set it back down in the grass. I resumed mowing the lawn. After I finished the job I noticed that the dragonfly was still in the grass where I had left it. I thought for sure it would fly away, but it didn't. I picked it up once more and cupped it in my hand. I ran into the house to show it to CAL and J. I had J take a picture of it.

The dragonfly buzzed like a plastic wind-up toy in my hands, shaking all of the water off of its wings. When I opened my hands a few seconds after J snapped the picture, it flew away to freedom. I stood there feeling utterly and completely amazed, as if I had just been visited by an angel or had a prophetic vision of some kind. Or maybe it was a visit from a totem animal.

To quote Aleister Crowley, "Magick is the science and art of causing change to occur in conformity with will." I believe that finding that dragonfly when I did was an act of magick. No bullshit.
